The Gulf of Alaska 2011

These are photos taken by Gary, the smiley guy in the yellow rain gear. We had ambitious plans to go to Prince William sound, however, the weather and time frame of voyage did not come together. We lost three days in our effort to get around Gore point from Homer. Knowing this, we made the best of it exploring the bays in the area, such as Port Chatum, Rocky Bay, and Windy Bay. I remember one evening when desperately looking for anchorage, we entered Rocky Bay, appropriately named, and that lead us further to Windy Bay, and it was very discouraging. As I drilled into the chart I saw a cove called Picnic Harbor, and Gary remarked, "I like that, that is a happy name, not like windy or rocky!" This was a good find and something for me to remember. It was a beautiful, safe harbor, right in from some of the most dangerous waters in the world. The photos here show presence of equipment of an old abandoned cannery in Port Chatam, and also Picnic Cove. The location of the overall voyage was in the Gulf of Alaska in the area of open water below the Kenai Peninsula. Leviathan finished out the rest of the summer in Katchamak Bay fishing halibut and inland pleasure trips to Seldovia, and one regatta of which we did pretty well in. We also crossed Cook Inlet and spent the night in Tuxidni bay earlier in the spring. What a boat......what fun!
